Good day! I am a writer/composer, currently working for the 2010 Charlottetown Festival, and very interested in researching two subjects of particular interest to the PEI community.

The first being any information (books, magazine articles, etc.) on the history of Moonshine and Rum-Running on the
Island.

The second, "Barn Stars". I see them everywhere - and, besides finding them most attractive, would love to learn
anything about their genesis - and obvious popularity.

Thanks, in advance, for any assistance.
Sincerely, Marek Norman (416) 465-7823

I learned from Miami University Hamilton faculty that the campus requires a 2.0 minimum GPA for students to enroll in distance learning courses. They also require students to meet with their advisors for "the talk"--an explanation of the demands and benefits of online courses.

Thanks for posting this! "Distance Learning" was on the list of tracks Dean Taylor encouraged as one focus for proposals in that last round of college faculty support funding. Now here is a follow-up for those who missed that opportunity, as I did, even knowing how badly we need stronger support for digital advances in teaching and learning.

There have been two interesting threads lately on the Ohio Learning Network list -- one on distance learning course caps (15-25 is average, a couple schools in Texas go to 30, though it was not clear that these were literature or writing intensive courses). A second recent thread seems to reflect that it is still/again common to support the development, and even sometimes first run, of online and hybrid courses, in many Ohio institutions. I was not aware that this was so, in today's budget environment. Anyway, thanks for a very timely notice of funding with a Sept 30 deadline, a moment to think.

Thanks for calling attention to this apt titling: random acts of distance learning. A number of years ago there was extended talk of a coherent online GE contingent of courses -- your Digital Studies Certificate/Minor is a timely update on that still very good idea! You've just outlined a focused, cogent way of further supporting digital learning (and teaching) in the college and university.

Margie, good idea about submitting that form online. I see the same need for digital sharing of promotions documents -- to catch up to some of the hiring/human resources developments in shared data/documents.
